Change in comment system

This is to give you a heads-up re: a change I have just made. I had started out with a reply system that allowed comments to be threaded down to the 5th level. People could reply directly to a previous commenter and their reply would show up under that particular comment. This has advantages. It makes it easier to follow a particular discussion.

The disadvantage is that if you want to just check on comments made since you last looked at them, you have to scan through the whole list and look for what may be new. I think it may be best, therefore, not to allow threading. All comments will then show up in the order of their posting.

I wish that the system numbered comments for easy cross-reference, when you do reply to a previous comment. I think it will still work, however, if we simply name the person to whom we are replying and either clip a small piece of their post or identify the point to which we are speaking.

This may change again but I want to try a simple chronological ordering. Feel free to express your own druthers in comments on this post, but I’m not making this a ballot which will govern the system we ultimately use.
